Rupert comes over from the USA (yes his accent is American and no its not very good - at least Buffy got Anthony Head so his accent was genuine) to tell his godson (Cook) that he was the last of the Van Helsings and that he destined to "smite" "half life’s". So kind of sounds like something I have seen before but one man and one vampire hunter it’s not the same, hang on, next we have Helsing’s best friend (Grainger) and blind vampire Mina (Tapper) which now means we have a team, opps I mean Scooby gang! OK so I am now hoping the actual show is better then what I have read about it and seen so far! Season 1 has just arrived so let’s see!
Ok, so I was quite excited by this, been a Doctor Who fan and various other shows in that genre I was excited at the prospect of another show from ITV that could wet my appetite for fantasy and sci fi.
The trailer was great, it showed all the right elements of what a good fantasy and science fiction should.
Billed as a new family show for a Saturday night this to me was the only let down, I am all for having family entertainment but I do like my demons to be slightly dark! But maybe I will be surprised!
The first thing I noticed about the show is the fact its only 6 episodes long, which to me isn’t the best way to go! How can any show that is going to be complicated (different level of demons, massive back story with the whole Bram stoker story) have only 6 episodes. see you in 270 minutes time.
ok so not exactly 270 minutes later, more like 500. The show started off well, not the best script but I was intrigued by the story, The effects are also pretty good. By the 3rd episode I needed a rest, the show didn’t hold my attention, but for the sake of a good back story I continued.
It always amazes me how it never really matters how good the actor if the script isn’t very good then it really makes the show or film look bad, even the 2 appearances by Wilson in the 2nd episode didn’t do it for me, he looked like he had walked off the Merlin set and straight onto Demons.
Overall I think the show has a lot of potential and I hope it will be back with a second series as I think it may do well if they get some better writers. It’s certainly nothing new and its certainly no Doctor Who but a slightly good attempt at ITV to create something exciting and a good excuse to watch some telly on a Saturday night!
A bunch of new faces with veteran actors to help push this show, kind of predictable but generally a good way to move. Philip Glenister is the big name, known for his role in Life on Mars this is sure to bring in some attention. His character is Rupert Galvin - already I am thinking Giles from Buffy and its starting to turn my stomach o so ever slightly. Next we have Christian Cook playing the lead character Luke Rutherford aka Van Helsing. Next we have Holliday Grainger playing Ruby best friend to Van Helsing, Zoe Tapper as Mina Harker, a blind vampire who has visions of what may come. Then we have the biggest, in my view name of the show Richard Wilson playing Father Simeon a zombie priest.
Demons Series 1 is out now on DVD and can be bought at your local shop at a reasonably priced £19.99 or play.com for an even better £12.99
