The former Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Councillor Elaine Garland, will be making her Charity Appeal cheque presentation next week.
During her period of office as Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Garland collected money for the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal Fund for her two chosen charities - Hull Rape Crisis and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Through the many donations made by people from 22 May 2008 to 20 May 2009, the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal Fund collected a total of £52,539.72, meaning each charity will benefit from a donation of £26,269.86.
Councillor Garland said: "I would like to thank the many people and businesses that supported my Charity Appeal. Special thanks particularly go to Phil Brown and Paul Duffen from Hull City, James Rule from Hull FC, and Neil Hudgell and Mike Smith from Hull Kingston Rovers.
"To have collected over £52,000 is amazing, particularly during such a difficult financial time for people. In addition, this is more than double the totals of previous years.
"I would also like to thank the Charity Committee for their tireless work in helping to raise such a fantastic total. I hope that this money will go some way to help both charities continue with their excellent work and support."
The former Lord Mayor will present her cheques to representatives of Hull Rape Crisis and Marie Curie Cancer Care on Monday 5 October 2009 at 1pm in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour, Guildhall.
