Phil Brown said he was pleased with the way his Hull City side performed against Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON on Saturday, although he felt the draw was a fair result.

Neither side could break the deadlock at the KC Stadium, although the Tigers came closest with Michael Turner's header being saved on the line, meaning the two sides will meet again at St James' Park a week on Wednesday.

"I suppose the draw was fair, but it wasn't for the want of trying," said Brown.

"Both sides endeavoured to win the game. I thought we had been done by goal-line technology (with Turner's header), but the replays are inconclusive and it was impossible for the linesman to give a goal.

"I thought we threatened, certainly from set pieces. We could have been more fluent with our passing, but having made seven changes I suppose I'm responsible for that.

"But the bottom line is that we took Newcastle United very close. Never mind the pre-match hype about what team they were going to put out, that was their full-strength team.

"Some of my players have given me food for thought. It's about getting the balance right between entertaining football, winning football and a clean sheet mentality.

"In the last two games we've got back to that ugly side of the game. We didn't play as much of the pretty football as I would want to but we took a very good team very close.

"But Newcastle probably felt they deserved a draw and deserved to be in the hat for the fourth round.

"I spoke to Ian Ashbee after the game. He has been here seven years and never been in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

"We'll be going into the replay in a positive mood."
