Saturday 20th June saw hordes of people attend the third Ella Street Festival. The bi-annual event is organised by a comity of Ella Street residents; all of which are enthusiastic about their street and keen to celebrate the diversity and creativity of the area.

Dr. Helen Thomas from the comity reported that there were twice as many people on the street at than in previous years. Despite intervals of stormy downpours, the spirit of the festival persevered; with a BBQ, outdoor cinema and firework finale ending the evening’s events.

Entertainment included street performers, DJs and live music, plus a gigantic sand pit and a variety of stalls offering everything from holistic healing to a charity tom bola, which raised £126 to feed hungry people in Hull all in less than an hour!

The Love Local team were out promoting the discount scheme. Free eco-friendly fair-trade bags were being handed out to local residents and people who shop down Newland Avenue to encourage more spending in Love Local shops. By showing this bag in any of the 70 Love Local businesses down Newland Avenue you’ll receive a discount or special offer! Simple. Many people in the area already have the bags, but new colours and designs made their debut at the festival. These new bags are free to new members or £3 to people already signed up to the scheme and can be found in any of the 70 Love Local businesses or at Community Church Hull on Newland Avenue.
